September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

"Welcome to the place no one wants to be.

We're glad you found us."

This is the odd greeting we extend on the listservs when yet  another stunned parent  joins our undesirable ranks.   None of us ever dreamed we would be in this position and not one of us would wish this on our  worst enemy, but all of us  will tell you that we see life with different eyes now, embrace our families  with greater love, and have been unexpectedly blessed with wonderful friendships we otherwise would not have made.   So, whether you are a parent still reeling from the shock of your child's  diagnosis, a battle-weary veteran of the childhood cancer war, or a dedicated  medical professional seeking to understand the other side of the coin, we welcome you warmly to our little corner of the web, thank you for visiting, and pray you will find in our pages some hope, inspiration, beneficial information, and encouragement.

Last month the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine released the highly anticipated report Childhood Cancer Survivorship: Improving Care and Quality of Life.

This report reviews the current state of childhood cancer survivorship and proposes a comprehensive policy agenda that links improved health care delivery, investments in education and training regarding late effects, and expanded research to improve the long-term outlook for survivors.

Court Overrides FDA Pediatric Rule A federal judge decided last month that the FDA overreached its authority in attempts to enforce the "pediatric rule," a regulation that would require pharmaceutical sponsors to conduct pediatric studies on drugs used to diseases similar in children and adults.

Words from a broken-hearted mother

"Before I was a cancer Mom,
I loved my daughter more than myself and life at that.
After she was diagnosed, I knew that I would die for her.
Before I was a cancer mom, a bruise meant a milestone normally.
After, a bruise caused fear to run through my veins, and my dashing to the
phone to confirm her platelet count one more time.
Before I was a cancer mom, the little things were important, but maybe I
didn't always count them.
After I was a cancer mom, the little things were EVERYTHING.
When I was a cancer mom, I rocked and held my little girl and thanked God she
was at least alive and living.
Since becoming a bereaved mom, I rock myself to sleep and ask God,
" Why isn't she alive and well?"
When I was a cancer Mom, I laughed and played and knew not to take one day
for granted.
Since becoming a bereaved mom, I pray the days go by as fast as possible
so I can be with my child again.
When I was a cancer mom...I held my child.
Since I became a bereaved mom, I hold her picture."
